Asthma Management

Asthma is a very common condition, affecting 1 in 9 Australians, and can be life-threatening. People with asthma have sensitive airways in their lungs which react to triggers, causing a ‘flare up’. In a flare-up, the muscles around the airways squeeze tight, the airways swell and become narrow and there is more mucus. These things make it harder to breathe. An asthma flare-up can come on very slowly (over days) or very quickly (over minutes). A sudden or severe asthma flare-up is sometimes called an asthma attack and requires immediate medical attention.

While asthma can’t be cured, for most people it can be well controlled on a daily management plan. Along with your GP, our pharmacists can help equip you with the correct knowledge, skills and medication so you can do just about anything!

We can help with:

  • Explaining the different medicines (preventers, relievers, combination) and how to use them.
  • Showing you the best way to use a puffer and/or spacer – this is vital for getting the right dose!
  • Discussing common concerns or questions.
